Auhinda annab välja The Mythopoeic Society, kasumit mittetaotlev rahvavalgustuslik organisatsioon, mis koondab lugejaid, teadlasi ja fänne, kelle põhihuviks on Inklingite (J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis ja Charles Williams) looming ning sellega seonduv, aga samuti ka lihtsalt fantaasiakirjandusse ja müütidesse puutuv. Auhind on väikese istuva lõvi kuju, mis kujutab ilmselt lõvi Aslani C. S. Lewise «Narnia kroonikatest». Ametlikult auhinda Aslaniga ei seostata.
